Covid Might Go Away, But The Technological Advances Will Not

Covid is going to make for a much different reality after we get back to "normal"

We’re in the throws of the “second wave” of the Covid-19 global pandemic. Things are getting scary. People are, if not yet already, hunkering down in their homes to stay safe.

As with the first wave of the pandemic, people are turning to the internet as a way to socialize, do work, and stay connected. Zoom, Google Meet, and other video-conferencing platforms are booming with use. Places like Airbnb are doing virtual experiences like excursions and events (Zoom is as well with their On.Zoom platform).

A colleague of mine recently posted on LinkedIn how the idea of a “new normal” isn’t a thing. The pandemic is leading us to a new future with greater innovation and new ideas.

Good things will come from the adversity caused by the pandemic. Yes, some things will return to how they were before the “Great Pandemic of 2020”, but a lot will not.

Work from home is here to stay

Businesses have realized that allowing their workforce to work from home isn’t a bad thing. They can save on office space, commute time, and morale in many places is up. More and more businesses will continue to allow for some amount of work from home options, even if it’s not all the time.

People are getting closer

Many families and friends who wouldn't connect in a “normal” instance, except for large gatherings, will continue to gather on video platforms in the future. Which in the long run will bring people closer together.

So, what does this mean for marketing?

Traditional marketers will likely see a downward trend as more people stay home and less commute to jobs and school. This means fewer eyes on billboards and ears hearing radio ads.

There has been and will continue to be, an uptick in the digital marketing space. More companies are seeing the value in selling online and we will continue to see platforms like Shopify and WordPress' WooCommerce grow in popularity with business owners and consumers get used to online ordering goods and products.

Covid-19 is a scourge, but it will lessen and treated with vaccines and therapeutics. Even with the advances and the eventual treatment of Covid-19, many of the changes the pandemic has caused to society both online and off are here to stay.
